School Curriculum Overview by Year Group

How we support mental maths… 99 club!

99 club has been developed to help raise standards in Numeracy by encouraging pupils to improve their mental maths and therefore increase the speed and confidence they tackle mental maths problems in Maths lessons, across the curriculum and in day-to-day life.

At Lanner Primary School, all of KS2 participate in 99 club. In KS1, the children begin 99 club from the summer term of Year 1. As this is our introductory year, Y2 started 99 club in the spring term.

All pupils have one opportunity per week to complete the next level. All pupils start on 11 club and work their way up.

Once children have reached the 99 club, they will attempt the Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum clubs. On their first attempt, the children have 10 minutes to complete each level. Once they have achieved this, the time is reduced to 6 minutes and they start again at Bronze, working their way through to Platinum.

When they have completed the levels within 6 minutes, the time is then reduced to 5 minutes and they start working through the stages again. We will continue to reduce the time by 1 minute until we reach the times stipulated by the Disraeli scheme (10 minutes to complete questions for clubs 11 to 99, 4 minutes for Bronze, 3:30 minutes for Silver, 3 minutes for Gold and only 2 1/2 minutes for platinum).

Bronze – up to 12 x and ÷ (4 minutes)

Silver - up to 12 x and ÷ (3 ½ minutes)

Gold - up to 12 x, ÷ , √ (3 minutes)

Platinum – all 4 operations (x, ÷, -, + )
